Materials matter
Full-Grain Leather
For our leather goods, we use a specially developed hybrid tanning process. This gives our gear the renowned durability of mineral-tanned hides, plus the richness and ability to age handsomely like the vegetable-tanned heirlooms we treasure from past generations.
After visiting our tannery partners in person, it was clear why they are so proud of their longstanding Gold rating from the Leather Working Group—the highest rating for environmental compliance and stewardship.
Mind-bendingly flexible and fun
Gnarlon™
MagLock® Sunglasses are 45% plant-based to be exact! We sourced a remarkable shape-memory material made from castor plants, and combined it with ultra-flexible and durable TPU in a combo we call Gnarlon™.
Bio-based Pebax® Rnew® is made from sustainably farmed castor plants for a material with a reduced carbon footprint. The high-performance elastomer is lightweight, flexible and tough—without the need for harmful plasticizers.
Rugged and sustainable
VentureTek™
Our leather-free, high-performance VentureTek™ gear is made using eVent BIO fabric that's castor-bean based. The renewable crop doesn’t compete with food sources or cause deforestation. Paired with recycled materials, eVent BIO is water-resistant, chemical-proof and UV-resistant—a true innovation in sustainability.
Plus, unlike petroleum-based “vegan leather,” the item you hold in your hands is proof that long-wearing alternatives to leather can be eco-friendly, too.
Sunglasses: An Origin Story
It all started when Nate went to his alma mater's football game in 2011 and lost the most expensive pair of sunglasses he’d ever owned. They were hanging from his t-shirt collar, like they always did—but this time they fell off and were lost. Forever.
That frustration drove Nate—our co-founder and lead designer—into the Distil workshop with an idea for a simple fix... little did Nate know, he was making the first-ever prototype of what would in 2017 become our MagLock™ Sunglasses.
