Distil Artist Series: Becca Barnet
Becca Barnet of Sisal Creative's work is detailed, obsessive, magical-realism. She enjoys working with sculpture, painting, and drawing.
Originally from Spartanburg, SC, Becca moved to Charleston from New York City. She wanted to live in a smaller town, make art and (most importantly) get a dog. Becca has always loved art. When she was little, she used to draw Disney characters and illustrate books. She made her parents' basement into a diorama.
This is Becca.
What's your favorite part of the creative process?
Figuring out how to use materials to the best of their ability. Putting unexpected things together.
How does your everyday life influence your work?
My home and city are very inspiring. Color, texture, light!
Do you listen to music while you work? If so, what tunes are you listening to lately?
YES - C.W. Stoneking
Who or what is your greatest source of inspiration?
Carl Akeley
What's the inspiration behind your Wally Case design?
Mexican textiles
Obviously there's no color option for laser-engraving, but when you do get to work with color, do you have a favorite color to use, and why?
I love primary colors that are a bit "off" - ash blue, mustard yellow, orange-red
What items do you never leave home without? i.e. your “everyday carry”
Phone/Wallet (Wally) and keys. I hate bags!
What are your go-to tools for creativity?
Instagram, Pinterest, natural history books and ephemera
Has having a smartphone affected your work, or your life as an artist? If so, how?
Definitely. I can write down ideas, look online for inspiration on the go. I enjoy taking quick reference photos as well and documenting my work on my iPhone plus.
What do you feel is the difference between art and design?
I think design serves a function, art comes from the desire to create. I love to blend the two.
Thanks, Becca!
